BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- China believes that Antonio Guterres is the right person for the next United Nations Secretary-General, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Thursday.
China is willing to work together with the international community to continue supporting the United Nations and the work of Guterres as UN Secretary-General, spokesperson Hua Chunying told a press conference.
She made the remarks in response to media reports that Guterres has written formally to the rotating president of the UN Security Council and the president of the UN General Assembly, expressing his willingness for re-election.
Hua said that the world is undergoing massive changes unseen in a century, and COVID-19 pandemic is still raging globally. Hua said as the international system with the UN as the core faces severe impact, the international community should firmly uphold multilateralism, safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and support the UN in playing a central role in international affairs.
Hua said since he took office as UN Secretary-General, Guterres has led the UN to play a positive role in safeguarding world peace and security, promoting sustainable development, and promoting international cooperation in fighting the pandemic. "China highly appreciates this," Hua said.
China believes that Guterres is the right person for the next UN Secretary-General, Hua said.
