BEIJING, June 30 -- "China resolutely opposes any form of official contacts and military links between Japan and China's Taiwan region under any pretext, and We have expressed serious concern to the Japanese side and demanded responsible clarifications from the Japanese side." said Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, at a regular press conference on Thursday, as he responded to the speculations that "the Japanese government might soon send its civilian official of defense ministry to station in Taiwan.”
The spokesperson pointed out that the Japanese side has previously made clear statement in the four political documents between China and Japan that it recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, and fully understands and respects the position of Chinese government that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China”, while merely maintaining non-governmental or regional contacts with Taiwan.
"If the Japanese side persists in provoking troubles and attempts to make a breakthrough in its relations with the Taiwan region, or even rocks the boat in the highly-sensitive field of military security, it is bound to cause serious consequences," the spokesperson warned.
The spokesperson stressed that Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereign and territorial integrity as well as China’s core interests. It's a major matter of principle concerning the political foundation of China-Japan relations. "We urge the Japanese side to neither send wrong signals to the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces in any form, nor interfere in China’s internal affairs in any form, and to do more things conducive to promoting China-Japan political mutual trust as well as regional peace and stability." he said.
